How to change a domainʼs IP address

Update DNS when changing servers while keeping the same domain name.

Prepare the new server

Move and check the website at the new host before changing DNS. Confirm the new addresses, domain setup and HTTPS. Changing an IP does not require a new domain name.

Save the existing settings

Record the current DNS settings before editing. Identify which names and services are moving: the main domain, www, other subdomains and email may use different settings.

Update the required records

Update A and, where applicable, AAAA at the authoritative DNS provider. With our nameservers, use the domainʼs DNS tab in your account. Check both address types before leaving an old address in one of them. Follow the providerʼs instructions for any CNAME change.

Allow for caching

Resolvers may retain earlier answers according to TTL. Do not switch off the old website solely because your own device already opens the new one. Agree checks of both servers and completion of the transition with your administrator in advance.

Check the website, HTTPS and email after changing DNS. See IP connection and DNS settings. Technical reference on caching: RFC 1034.
